How to go to bed earlier every night

Today is World Sleep Day and we strongly believe that the power of a good night’s sleep should never be underestimated.

It is common knowledge that the recommendation for adults it to get at least 8 hours sleep a night. It sounds so simple doesn’t it? But what about when there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day already to cover work, parenting and everything else we need to do.

Sometimes sleep can end up at the back of our minds, so how can we improve our sleep and get more zzz’s? In this blog post we will discuss how to get a refreshing night’s sleep and ways to help you get to sleep earlier on a night.

Your sleep environment

Your bedroom should be a safe haven which is clutter free and focused on sleep. This means that we should remove other items from the room, such as things related to work which can distract our mind away from sleep. Fresh or new bedding is also a great way to reignite our interest in spending more time in our bed.

Review your routine

We all have our own bedtime rituals and it certainly helps to wind down on an evening before we try to get to sleep. This is especially helpful when recovering from a particularly busy or stressful day. Before you start counting sheep, here are a few ideas of things you can put in to practice so that you can fall asleep more naturally…

  • Having a warm bath before bed
  • Reading a book or listening to relaxing music
  • Lighting a scented candle
  • Having a hot cup of (caffeine free) herbal tea
  • Writing in a diary or notebook
  • Practicing some yoga moves and meditation
  • Using a heated eye pillow
  • Dimming the lights in the room
  • Spending 10-15 minutes meditating

Make little changes

With a young child or baby, the common approach to bringing their bedtime forward is to make small adjustments every night, this is exactly what we should do for ourselves if we are trying to increase our sleep. Consider moving the time you go to bed forward 10-15 minutes earlier every night until you reach your goal. These small adjustments will mean that it won’t seem like a drastic change to your night and gradually you will adapt to this new routine.
