Hello 2020, we have made it through your January but February brought us some new challenges, as we faced stormy weather amass and some troublesome news stories. Amongst all of this we can’t helping feeling like there isn’t a more ideal time to be focusing on looking after ourselves and practising self-care.
This time of year is also the time when pressures typically mount in the workplace, and if you are currently experiencing the dreaded ‘burnout’ phase right now then adding some of these self-help books to your shelves might be just what you need.
It is World Book Day on Thursday and to celebrate we have created a round up of some of our favourite reads. These three books focus on explaining the psychology of our behaviour with recommendations to improve our daily lives.
Mindset by Dr Carol S.
Mindset (updated edition) by Stanford University psychologist Dr Dweck explores the power of the mind and how it can influence our life. According to Dweck, it is not just our abilities or talent that bring us success, but also whether we follow a fixed or growth mindset.

Start Now, Get Perfect Later by Rob Moore
The fear of failure can be one of the main reasons why we don’t go ahead with what we really desire. In Start Now, Get Perfect Later, Rob Moore encourages people to consider getting started as a first step and then making improvements along the way as we go. After all, how can we possibly get better if we don’t have any practise or experience? Quite often we won’t get it right the first time but what we learn in the beginning will be valuable to our journey.
Interestingly this book was an eye opener in terms of what we do in order to procrastinate. Most of us think that we are aware of our own procrastination, but we may not be fully aware of the extent of this and the signs we can recognise in ourselves if we are falling in to this trap. By identifying what our barriers are to success, we can overcome these traits in order to reach our true potential.
Persuasion: The Art of Influencing People by James Borg
Do you find it a struggle sometimes to bring people round to your way of thinking? Whether it be in work or your personal life, the power of persuasion can’t be ignored.

The book itself focuses on explaining the human behaviour and body language of not only of others, but also of ourselves. There are many practical ideas and real world insights which for me speak loudly particularly in the context of the workplace.

If you are looking for something new to listen to we would highly recommend listening to The Happiness Lab by Dr Laurie Santos. The series covers how to live a happier life and takes a deep look at what makes us truly happy, as explained by science. It comes as no surprise to us that more money, a promotion and a load of Instagram followers are not the real key to happiness. Each episode has a new guest and there is plenty of discussion around real-life stories. The podcast itself is an easy listen and is split up in to interesting key topics, with the claim to change the way you think about happiness overall.
